Nout Bodyn (b. 2000, Kluisbergen, Belgium). When he looks at the world and observes what is happening around him, he also sees it as a reflection of what is unfolding within himself. In his work, he positions himself as an observer of this dialogue between the internal and the external.
He is often engaged with the connection between the infinity of inner space and the finiteness of outer physical form, creating a sense of intrigue within the sculpture. His works are characterized by liminal spaces, openings, entrances, exits, and in-between spaces that serve as the lungs of his creations.
Through his sculptures, he aims to communicate in a universal, non-verbal manner. His sculptural work balances between abstraction and figuration, as forms embody one another through a mutual, continuous interaction.
The works transform the familiar into the unusual, a sensation that echoes Freud's concept of the Unheimliche. This unsettling feeling arises when something familiar acquires an unexpected or disturbing quality, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. In doing so, the sculptures evoke a psychological response that invites reflection.
This tension creates situations in which ambiguity, mystery, desire, and silence coexist.
Through his use of scale, material, color, dynamic interplay, and spatial tension, he creates a sense of disarray that transports viewers into an alternative world.
