Nout Bodyn (BE, 2000) is an artist living and working in Kluisbergen. The oeuvre of Nout Bodyn has been accumulating since 2020. When he looks at the world and observes what is happening around him, he sort of sees it as a projection of what’s unfolding within himself. In his work, he positions himself as an observer of that internal-external dialogue.
He is often engaged with the connection between the infinity of inner space and the finiteness of outer physical form, which gives a sculpture something intriguing. His works are characterized by liminal spaces, openings, entrances, exits and the in-between spaces that serve as the lungs of his creations.
He infuses humor into his work in a playful and unexpected manner. Through his sculptures, he aims to communicate in a universal, non-verbal manner. His sculptural work balances between abstraction and figuration, as forms embody one another through a mutual, continuous interaction.
Although they stand on their own, the works can also be seen in a larger context into dialogue with both his surroundings and the sculptures themselves. The works have the ability to transform the familiar into the unusual, a sensation that echoes Freud’s concept of the Unheimliche. This unsettling feeling arises when something known gains an unexpected or disturbing twist, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. In doing so, his sculptures tap into a deep psychological response, evoking an abstract unease that invites reflection. This psychological tension gives rise to situations characterized by absurdity, mystery, desire, and silence.
Through his use of scale, material, color, dynamic interplay, and spatial tension he creates a sense of disarray that transports viewers into an abstract, alternative world.
